Hugo could not believe his luck! Of all the places Miss de Courtenay could have found herself, it would be the place Hugo was doing a bit of business.

He returned his attention to the men at his table and began discussing the contraband he had for sale. He had been cursing the need to travel in this weather, but it was becoming a most profitable and pleasant excursion after all!

CHAPTER 9

Aboard The Legacy, Friday morning gave way to early afternoon with the clouds thickening. Jasper checked the barometer and wasn’t pleased with what he saw. “I don’t like the look of this,” he complained bitterly, before raising his eyes to the thunderous clouds above. “I’ve got to be the biggest idiot in all of England and France to be sailing out into weather like this.”

“What option do we have?” Gasparel asked, holding the hood of his oiled coat while the wind tried to wretch it from his hand. “We couldn’t sail in the storm earlier this week. If you don’t think this is going to blow over, we could delay another day.”

Jasper swore. “And miss the delivery date of our cargo? That’s really not an option.”

“Then we must get underway before the tide is no longer in our favor. Surely we can make it across the Channel without further incident?”

“One can only hope.” Jasper scanned the dock and finally saw the carriage he had been waiting for. “Looks like the last of our passengers decided to show up. I’d best go greet them. As soon as they’re onboard, along with their luggage, take us out while I show them to their cabins.”

“Aye, Captain,” his first mate exclaimed, before standing next to the wheel.

Jasper descended from the taffrail and met Lord Hythe at the railing. “Welcome aboard The Legacy, my lord.”

Hythe extended his hand and the two men shook. “Sorry for the delay, Captain Rousseau, but my sister’s maid is not too keen on traveling.”

“It happens to the best of us,” Jasper replied politely. He glanced at the girl, who looked positively green, and they hadn’t even left the dock yet.

“Fliss, may I present our captain, Captain Jasper Rousseau. Captain, my sister, Lady Felicity Belvoir, and her maid Miss Theodosia Conroy,” Hythe continued. Jasper contained his astonishment at being introduced to a servant. He’d heard the Belvoir family called progressive in their thinking, and apparently it was true.

Jasper gave a short nod. “A pleasure, ladies, but let’s get you out of the rain and into your cabins. You’ll at least be warm and out of the elements.”

Taking them below, he first showed Hythe to his cabin before opening the door next to his wide enough for the ladies to enter. Their luggage followed right behind them and Miss Conroy all but fell into a nearby chair.

“We may encounter rough water due to the storm,” Jasper explained, trying not to alarm the women but it was best they were prepared. “Please stay inside your cabin.”

“We’ll be sure to do so," Lady Felicity responded, her eyes twinkling.
